Blood Cancer: Causes,Symptoms & Treatment


 As we know, blood is the essential fluid in our body which circulates oxygen, nutrients, hormones & antibiotics to various parts of the body. Blood consists of plasma & other blood cells( RBC, WBC & platelets). Cancer in the blood affects mainly white blood cells.

Blood cancer is a condition in which there's an abnormal growth of blood cells & excess production of WBC cells which affects the normal function of blood cells. 

Blood cancer is of 3 types:

  1. Leukemia: The most common type of blood cancer in children below age 15. It prevents WBC cells from fighting infections in the body. It mainly affects lymphocytes & immune cells. 

  2. Lymphoma: The most common cancer in adults. It occurs when the WBC cells reproduce rapidly for no purpose. It affects the lymphatic system, which is mainly accountable for eliminating the waste substances from various organs of the body. 

  3. Myeloma: Myeloma affects the immune system. It targets the plasma cells, which particularly produce antibodies to fight infection. 


Cause:

The cause of blood cancer is unknown. These are some factors that can trigger it.

  • Aging

  • Family history

  • Weak immune system

  • Certain infections

  • Smoking habits 

  • Genetic disorder

  • Exposure to a lot of radiation or chemicals 


Signs & symptoms:


Blood cancer symptoms vary based on the affected blood cells. In some cases, there are no symptoms in the initial stage, which later progress to a chronic condition. Some of the common blood cancer symptoms are as follow:


  • Weight loss

  • Frequent infections

  • Bleeding gums

  • Anemia

  • Tiredness and fatigue

  • Difficulty in breathing 

  • Back pain, abdominal pain, and bone pain

  • Fever

  • Dark spots and fine rashes

  • Enlargement of lymph node


Treatment :


During the blood cancer treatment period, it's necessary to maintain a proper healthy diet, with some lifestyle changes that help in fast recovery.


  • Chemotherapy

  • Bone marrow transplantation 

  • Biological therapy
